Police treating Kinloss car fire as "wilful" after neighbour describes hearing "big boom"

POLICE are investigating an incident in which a car was badly damaged by a fire in Kinloss.

One neighbour described a "big boom" and then part of the white Ford Focus ST "exploding on the street and pavement".

The drama unfolded just before 8pm on Wednesday, February 21.

Firefighters and police were quickly on the scene.

"It looked like something was on the roof of the car and then exploded," added the woman, who didn't want to be named.

"It was so shocking and my first reaction was to dial 999. I was just about to let my dog out when it happened."

Police say they are treating the fire as wilful but confirmed there were no injuries.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “At around 8.30pm on Wednesday, February 21 we were made aware of a car on fire on Grange Road in Kinloss.

“The fire was extinguished and no-one was injured.

“The incident is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing."

One fire appliance was mobilised to the scene but firefighters found that the blaze had already been extinguished.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Crews cooled the engine using hose reel jets and there were no reported casualties.

“Crews left the scene at 9pm after ensuring the area was made safe."
