Within the past four days more than 1700 households in Moray have booked a visit to the council's recycling centres.

.

The predictably huge demand comes as the local authority's four recycling centres re-opened again today, having been shut since lockdown began nine weeks ago.

The council announced on Friday that it was taking bookings to enable residents to clear the backlog of items which have piled up in sheds, attics and elsewhere around their homes.

A council spokesperson said: "Please be patient and understanding – this is our first day open to the public with these new restrictions.

"Remember access will only be granted with a valid booking reference.

"You must book ahead and only attend during your allocated slot."

The centres – at Chanonry in Elgin, Waterford in Forres, Gollachy in Buckie, and Keith – are open with strict social distancing measures in place.

More than 2,500 booking slots are available across all the centres weekly.

Residents are urged to book online here.

However, those not on the internet can ring the council's contact centre.

Only cars will have access to the site. No pedestrians, trailers or other larger vehicles like vans and trucks will be permitted.

One visit per fortnight will be allowed to make sure as many residents as possible can access booking slots.
