THE COUNTDOWN to a sporting event which, last time it was held, saw footfall increase by nearly a quarter, is on!

Forres Highland Games will take place in Grant Park on Saturday, July 2 following a two year break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

And games secretary Mike Scott confirmed the organising committee are introducing changes including giving more businesses the opportunity to get in on the action.

He said: “It feels really good to be back. My own involvement has spanned over 60 years so there was a huge void in 2020 and 2021 when the games were unable to go ahead.

“However, we are raring to go now and hope to build on the success of 2019 when footfall increased by 20 per cent and we attracted tourists from a variety of countries. We are confident that we will be also be welcoming a strong local audience because the event has been missed.”

In 2019, thousands of people including tourists from Germany, Hong Kong, Spain, the USA, New Zealand, Ireland, France and Canada descended attended. Now in its 94th year, the event has always been an international affair.

Despite the event being traditional and steeped in history, the committee are looking to the future.

Mike explained: “We are encouraging prospective stallholders to get in touch. We still want to hear from our existing traders who have supported us over the years but there are so many other beautiful, independent crafters and producers that can use the games to showcase what Forres, Moray and the Highlands have to offer.”

The games committee has commissioned a new a logo to modernise the event’s look and now have an official sponsor pack.

Mike added: “We have had huge support from local businesses who have always been keen to sponsor one of our main events.

“However, our new sponsor pack also includes the opportunity to take an arena banner and have branding on the message bikes, an attraction which is completely unique to the Forres Highland Games.

“We are very much looking forward to 2022 and working with the people of the town, sponsors, competitors and all those involved and hope we can build on the success of the last 94 years.”
