A POPULAR shop in the centre of Forres is having a refit as part of a brand takeover.

McColl’s convenience store at 81 High Street will follow the example of the Fleurs Place branch which became a Morrisons Daily last year.

Joyce MacDonald became supervisor of the corner shop that opened 30 years ago in 2015.

She said: “There's a big difference with Morrison’s stock, particularly the prices.

“New products include frozen meals, fresh vegetables, chilled products, a section for allergies ... and we have a Costa Coffee machine!”

In 2022, McColl’s was placed in voluntary administration and purchased by Morrisons. At the time, Morrisons announced it would close 132 loss-making McColl’s stores and convert the remaining ones into Morrisons Daily stores within the next two to three years.

Morrisons, is the fifth largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom with around 500 stores.

Heather Logie has been a supervisor at 81 High Street since it first opened as McColl’s in 1995.

She said: “It’s exciting! Everything is clean and tidy with new products.”

The re-branded store continues to offer the only newspaper delivery service in Forres.

Ms Logie added: “We enjoy interacting with our customers and I especially like being able to help them!”

Ms MacDonald confirmed the new shop retains its three full-time and three part-time members of staff.

She said: “Being in the town centre is handy, even for folk coming up the street for other things. We’re in just the right place.

“I love talking to the customers. The shop is steady anyway but we're even busier as a Morrison’s Daily!”
