VOLUNTEERS from a dedicated rescue service are asking the community to help name their new tractor.

Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation (MIRO) have taken delivery of a new Kubota tractor which will be used to launch and recover their rescue boat, Glyn Whitehead III.

MIRO chairman is grateful to the Department for Transport for awarding £15,592.45 from the 2019/2020 Inshore and Inland Rescue Boat Grant Fund to support the purchase of the tractor and five dry suits.

He said: "The new tractor will enable our crew to safely launch the rescue boat from the boatyard at Findhorn Marina in the winter months when the dry dock and pontoon are off the water.

"We recently bought 10 dry suits with an award from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme. The additional five will mean that all of our crew will be equipped with new suits, thus enhancing their safety when responding to emergency call outs."

The Inshore and Inland Rescue Boat Grant Fund’s supports the work of charities that operate lifeboats with capital spending to maintain and enhance their operational capacity.

MIRO operations manager, Peter Mackenzie, said: "Whilst our weekly crew training has been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic and current guidelines on social distancing, our volunteers continue to update and maintain their skills and knowledge individually.

"Our crew are ready to respond should MIRO be tasked to assist in an emergency situation."

MIRO are hoping that the general public will help with the naming of their new tractor. Suggestions are welcome via email at tractor@morayinshorerescue.org by May 25.

MIRO's crew will be asked to vote on the proposed names to select a name for the tractor. The decision will be announced on June 1.

MIRO is manned entirely by unpaid volunteers who give up their time to train, raise funds and save lives. Fundraising is ongoing throughout the year.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to MIRO can do so by clicking on the VIRGIN MONEY GIVING box at www.morayinshorerescue.org
