EVERYONE is invited to help start a community growing project behind Sanquhar pond.

Forres Friends of Woods And Fields (FFWF) - who formed two years ago to restore woodland at Sanquhar and support food sustainability via fields at Chapleton - hope as many people as possible help plant a new community fruit orchard from 11am on Sunday, March 5.

Spokesman Nick Molnar confirmed a total of 40 trees are to be planted including apples, pears, plums and cherries.

He said: “There are damson and greengage as well as cob and filbert nuts to plant too. Many hands make light work and if everyone brings along some food we can share a picnic to celebrate our efforts. The tools will be provided but please come appropriately dressed.”

Upper Chapleton Field now features a one-acre garden and a smaller children’s garden both of which use regenerative agricultural practices. The new heritage variety fruit trees have been provided via the ‘Dandelion Unexpected Gardens’ growing project run by Findhorn Bay Arts.

Nick said: “Not only will the trees provide us with fruit, they will also contribute to carbon capture in the soil, helping to reduce global warming. And for those who walk through Chapelton Field, they will present a bonnie sight in blossom time!”

The site is currently being deer-fenced but here will be pedestrian access gates so everyone will always be welcome.

The orchard will be planted at the top of Chapelton Field, a short stroll from the wooden bridge at Sanquhar pond. It can also be accessed from St Leonard’s Road along the Chapelton Farm track. Parking is available in the Leanchoil Hospital forecourt.

The work has been made possible via developer obligations and grants from Tesco, Coop, Money for Moray and the Northern Meeting Charity.
