An unemployed Forres man who's already behind bars has been given an increased jail term.

Elgin Sheriff Court heard that, on February 22, Blair Cottar was at the house of his ex-partner when he became angry and started to insult and swear at her.

Another man arrived at the house and Cottar punched him several times in the face.

The 34-year-old then went into the woman's living room and began throwing items around, such as beer cans and an ashtray.

When asked to calm down, he swore at his ex-partner again before going into her kitchen and breaking a glass in the sink.

The woman rang the police, after which he grabbed the phone from her.

When officers arrived at the house, they told Cottar he was being arrested.

He responded by punching one in the head.

While being taken outside to a police vehicle he then attempted to kick another.

Defence solicitor Mark Gowans stated his client had stayed out of trouble for six years between 2014 and 2020, and had held down a job during that time.

Mr Gowans said: "He's perfectly fine when he's not using substances."

Cottar, who had already pleaded guilty to charges of assault and criminal damage at an earlier hearing, was brought to the dock yesterday in handcuffs.

He was sentenced to nine months in jail by Sheriff David Sutherland backdated to March 23.

Cottar was jailed for three months in March for a kicking a policeman in the face and trying to spit on others during a bust-up in Inverness last summer.
