A NEW club is offering secondary school age swimmers the chance to improve - for free.

Forres Active Schools coordinator, Rosalyn Carruthers, has established new sessions on Tuesdays during term time from 5.15-6.15pm - Forres Academy is funding the lane hire.

She said: “This is a grassroots club for pupils who may have moved away from competitive swimming and/or who are not feeling comfortable in public sessions at the pool. It is also open to club swimmers who want to represent the school.”

Reasons for attendance vary from promoting positive mental health and body image, to developing confidence with lane swimming. Some attendees add the sessions to their regular training schedule.

Mrs Carruthers added: “The club is a welcoming environment and under lead coach Heather Powell’s expertise, all participants have improved their skills and technique.”

Ms Powell has been supported by Active Schools volunteer Bruce Evans and parent Carla Martin.

“They’ve encouraged and assisted the swimmers,” said Mrs Carruthers. “There’s a focus on fun and improving stamina. This benefits the swimmers, along with the opportunity to have input as to what their personal reasons are for coming so we can meet their goals.”

Spaces opening up are being promoted through Active Schools Term time activities.

Attendee Austin Davies (S3) said: “The coaches are friendly and offer fantastic advice. It’s a great way to get rid of your stress.”

Fellow member, Neve Morrison (S4), added: “I really enjoy the swimming for fitness.”
