THE COMMUNITY is invited to a free event at the Tolbooth on Saturday to discuss the crisis facing the planet with local environmentalists.

Organisers Extinction Rebellion (XR) Forres are hosting the pop-up climate café - featuring free coffee, tea, home bakes and children’s activities - to spark conversation on biodiversity loss and climate change.

A spokesperson confirmed it is part of the Climate Fringe series of events being held by community groups across Scotland to get people talking about what needs to be done to address the issues ahead of the UN COP26 climate conference in Glasgow this November.

She said: "We are offering a free pop-up café to welcome local views on nature and what local people think needs to do done.

"Following lockdown, we know how important it is for our community to have a space to chat. I’m glad we can make the event free to make it available to everyone."

Climate Fringe is a website providing a platform to encourage connection around COP26. It was created by Stop Climate Chaos Scotland (SCCS) to share information on events across the country in the run up to COP.

SCCS is a coalition which has over 50 members including environment NGOs, community groups, development charities, unions, and faith and belief groups.

It is working with The COP26 Coalition, which is planning a 'People’s Summit' and 'Global Day of Action' ahead of COP26.

The XR spokeswoman explained: "COP26 will bring together leaders from around the world to discuss how to tackle the greenhouse gas emissions that are driving rapid climate change.

"It has been described as our last chance to meet the global Paris Agreement to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

"It’s vital that we as a local community have a voice to call for action to ensure our communities are protected from the worst consequences of climate change."

Saturday's café in Forres is being supported by businesses including the Findhorn-based Phoenix Shop and Café as well as Green Bridge Organics coffee roasting company.

It will take place on the ground floor of the Tolbooth from 10am to 2pm.

XR Forres has also organised a screening of David Attenborough’s documentary 'Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Our Planet' (2021) at Forres Town Hall on Friday September 10 at 7pm, where there will be an open discussion after the film. This event will also be free of charge.
