A consultation has shown only 22% of people are aware that period products can be obtained for free in Moray.

The Scottish Government policy for providing free period products for those who need them becomes a statutory duty for councils across the country from August 15.

Moray Council ran the consultation last month as part of that duty.

The items are already available in all local authority schools and around 100 public settings, including GP surgeries and toilets.

The council also already works with Moray Food Plus.

However the consultation was carried out to find out where there are gaps in provision.

Its results showed that while tampons and pads were the most popular items people wanted, there was strong support for re-usable products to be made available.

There was also support for them to be available online.

Councillors will be asked on Wednesday to approve plans to improve the selection and availability of products.

In a report prepared for the meeting, Will Napier, the council's senior policy officer for addressing poverty, said: "Not everyone who menstruates identifies as female.

"Therefore as part of ensuring a dignified approach, Moray Council will ensure that the arrangements put in place to meet our duties allow any individual who menstruates, including transgender men and non-binary individuals, to access products.

"In addition, in some cases men may wish to access products for free for family members or partners."

Funding for products will come from the Scottish Government.

The issue will be discussed at full council on Wednesday, August 10.
