FREE, local help is being offered to anyone who needs assistance with their finances.

Seven people attended the first informal and relaxed Christians Against Poverty (CAP) money management course at Forres Baptist Church on Clovenside Road in May - another three sessions are on Friday, September 1, 8 and 22 from 10am-noon.

Church secretary, Rosemary Pannell, confirmed the last course taught attendees to budget, save and prevent debt.

She said: “We liken it to giving your finances a spring clean. It is a helpful way of getting them organised and puts you in control.”

The free course devised by CAP in 2008 teaches budgeting skills and a simple, cash-based system. More than 1100 churches run the course in their communities, with over 10,000 people benefitting from it each year. There are extra resources for those on low incomes, the self-employed, couples, families and those preparing for retirement.

Ms Pannell explained: “People often feel overwhelmed trying to keep on top of finances. The course provides a clear, straightforward method to put money in order then manage it. Attendees put work into getting the information together, but it’s then just a case of maintaining it.”

Attendees support each other with tips and ideas as a group - coaches give additional support where required.

“You don’t have to share information about your personal finances,” added Ms Pannell. “We use examples to demonstrate how budgeting works and if further help is needed we signpost to appropriate services.”

Previous attendees to the CAP money course in Forres have said: “It’s a clear, concise, informative, helpful and practical course delivered with sensitivity and grace. Highly recommend” and “I got a real insight on how to budget and save”.

Ms Pannell finished: “It’s suitable for all and we welcome anyone. Have a cuppa, get new ideas or share your ideas about managing money while making new friends.”
