Four groups in Moray have been given The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service – which is the equivalent to an MBE.

Moray Food Plus, Gordonstoun Fire Service, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Moray Committee and 1st Buckie Company Boys’ Brigade have all been honoured.

Between April last year and March this Moray Food Plus received 3002 referrals and supported 6728 local people to choose in a dignified manner what they eat.

The volunteer fire unit at Gordonstoun operates three watches which are each on call 24/7 on a three-week rolling rota. Formed in the Second World War, it’s the only school fire service in the UK.

The Moray Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Committee fosters a love of the outdoors in young people and tries to help them develop skills for life.

1st Buckie is the largest Boys Brigade company in the country with 174 members and a leadership team of over 40 adults. This year the company celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Representatives from all four groups will receive the award crystal and certificate later this summer.

In addition, volunteers will be invited to a garden party at Holyroodhouse in July next year.

Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Moray, Nancy Robson OBE, said: "Many congratulations to the volunteers who have been recognised for their outstanding commitment and service.

"I'm so pleased that the Moray Lieutenancy was able to submit the nominations and provide the in-person assessments required."

Andrew Simpson, the Lord-Lieutenant of Banffshire, said: "I am delighted to congratulate all the members and leaders of the 1st Buckie Company Boys’ Brigade. This is an amazing achievement and reflects the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm of many people over the past 75 years.

"The support of families and the community is a key part of their success and thanks are due to all.

"Also, very well done to Captain Alan McIntosh and everyone associated with the group on this outstanding success."

Richard Lochhead said: "As the local MSP, I want to say a massive thank-you to Moray’s impressive army of volunteers for all that they do to make our community a better place."

"The vital role they play in our communities has never been more apparent than over the last few challenging years.

"Whether it is through community groups and halls, sports organisations, or local charities, every volunteer in Moray deserves huge credit for the excellent work they do."
