MORE than 40 people attended the 70th birthday celebrations of a local institution.

Forty-four members of the Forres Old Age Pensioners’ Association enjoyed high tea and reminiscing at the Mosset Tavern on Wednesday, March 9.

Association chairwoman Moyra Tulloch confirmed the group’s founding year was 1950 but the party was postponed due to the pandemic.

She added: “The Mosset high tea was fine.”

Moyra said the group – which currently numbers 57 members – has over the years met every Wednesday at the community hall on Bank Lane, in Castlehill Church and at current venue, Forres Town Hall.

She said: “Every week we have something different, be it music, bingo, talks... varied entertainment or just local information. Most recently, we had a representative from Trading Standards tell us about local scams.”

Moyra has great memories of Forres OAP Association events.

She said: “Like our annual bus runs as far away as Aberdeenshire and the Highlands. The woollen mill in Inverness is always popular – the ladies like to shop! And we always stop for soup and sandwiches then high tea.”

Association secretary of 38 years, June Kirk, took an original membership card and two old photographs of group members to the Mosset high tea.

She said: “The card belonged to Mrs Davidson of Tulloch Park who joined in 1950. It details membership fee of one shilling a year and lists other illustrious members including honorary president Lady Rachel Stuart, president Mrs ‘Baillie’ J Mackintosh, vice-presidents Mr A Cameron, Provost M Anderson, Colonel J H Souter and Reverend W P Wishart. The pictures are of the opening of the meetings at Bank Lane and a group of gentleman members sitting around tables.

“Both are from the 1950s.”
