FORRES is an "ideal place to live" during coronavirus lockdown measures, say Forres Stepping Out walking group, but open areas must be enjoyed responsibly.

Scotland’s walking charity Paths for All recently urged the public to stay active and take a walk every day amidst the Coronavirus outbreak, to keep fit and healthy, both physically and mentally.

And Forres Stepping Out backed that message – adding that there is no need for locals to get in their car to go for their daily walk.

Linda Scott, of Forres Stepping Out, said: "Forres is the ideal place to live during lockdown as it gives easy access to the outdoors with woods, open spaces and the river all on our doorstep.

"There are lots of opportunities for regular and varied walks within close proximity of Forres for residents, without the need of using transport. We should make use of them, while observing government guidelines on social distancing.

"While outdoors, take the opportunity to listen to the birds and look for signs of spring, trees coming into bud, wild flowers beginning to blossom and remember springtime is a time of hope.

"Those who are self-isolating or stuck at home are encouraged to follow the video links provided by Paths for All and to exercise at home. Walkers can contact the leaders by email if they want any further help or support."

Walkers who discover anything new or interesting while walking are encouraged to get in touch with Forres Stepping Out via email at fsowalkinggroup@gmail.com. These will be incorporated into future walks and pictures will be posted on Facebook for others to appreciate.

Paths for All has also launched new online guidance and links to resources which can help people stay active indoors, connect with nature outside and encourage those working from home to move more.

Ian Findlay CBE, chief officer at Paths for All, said: "Now more than ever it is important for people to look after their physical and mental health.

"Fresh air, being outdoors and connecting with nature is not only positive for your physical health, but it can help your mental health. We believe it is important for people to continue to enjoy short, local walks provided you are well and where it is safe and appropriate.

"The official advice is to stay local and avoid non-essential travel. You should try to visit places you know will be quiet, away from hotspots, and remember to keep a distance of at least two metres from other people.

"If you are unable to go outside for a walk, then there are many ways you can keep moving at home. Browse online for demonstration videos and resources and remember to take regular breaks from sitting down to get up and move around."
