Forres House is closed until the end of July to allow a new heating system, including a new boiler, to be fitted.

The work is part of an on-going makeover for the facility, aimed at serving the modern needs of the public.

"It has been timed to coincide with the summer holiday period when club activities are at their lowest," said a Moray Council spokesperson.

"Arrangements are being made to relocate user groups during the closure, with most going to Forres Academy or Applegrove Primary."

The heating system is being replaced due to age - the building dates from the 1970s. It is now considered to be life expired, and has little or no area controls, so its replacement will be more efficient.

"The new system must be on a list of priorities from before my time," said former Forres House employee, councillor Lorna Creswell.

"The fantastic facility is part of the Leisure Review being conducted by the Council - there are no funds for much more than the cost of the heating system but I’ll keep plugging away."

The new heating retains the existing gas boilers but has localised controls which will lead to significant costs savings.

The contract, which is for £236,000, will be carried out by ESG Facilities Services. It includes the removal of the existing oil tank and associated pipework and controls; the removal of the existing heating system; the installation of new radiators, new kitchen worktop, new roof access system and the installation of a new doorway between the oil tank and boiler room.
