A flourishing sports club for young females has been kitted out by a local business.

Waterford-based AJ Engineering has supplied Forres Girls Football Club (FGFC) with 38 new, numbered strips, worn for the first time when the team played at Brora on Saturday, August 26.

AJE director and general manager, Graham Alexander, confirmed the firm was delighted to support the club.

He said: “We recognise the importance of getting young people into active pursuits and know the benefits of being part of a team.

“It’s a thriving club, testament to the hard work of head coach Graeme Sutherland and the volunteers that give so much of their time to run it so well. The new kits look great and we are pleased the players like them.”

FGFC was founded in 2018. It now trains over 100 primary and secondary school aged girls each week with the support of around 20 volunteers.

Coach Sutherland, who is also club chairman, is thrilled with the support from AJE.

He said: “This is fantastic for us. When we handed out the strips, we had numerous messages from parents saying their daughters were delighted with them. The strips are numbered - we’ve never had that before. They look great and give the girls a real sense of pride.”

FGFC was started when there was no designated girls football club in the area.

“At first we had around 10 or 11 players,” explained coach Sutherland. “Keeping girls in sport, particularly when they reach secondary school age, is important and we want to ensure there is an accessible club where everyone feels comfortable.”

FGFC is affiliated to Scottish Women’s Football.

“We are properly run, have good governance and insurance,” said Mr Sutherland. “Without the support of volunteers, it would be impossible to offer the opportunities we do. We have an under-14s team that play in the Highland League and the younger ones play in a football festival every month. However, there’s no pressure on players to attend matches, we just want them to come to training, be with friends and enjoy themselves.”
