A Forres firm has been awarded a contract to help develop an X-ray system that looks for flaws in rocket engines.

Given the physical strains and pressures associated with space flight, even the tiniest inperfection could prove ruinous.

Therefore Orbex, alongside Danish company FORCE Technology, has been tasked by the European Space Agency (ESA) with developing an inspection system that can reveal any manufacturing defects issues prior to flight.

Working a little bit like a medical CT scanner, the idea is to use X-rays so no damage is caused in the process.

The two firms are now set to carry out inspections on Orbex’s large-scale 3D-printed rocket engines.

The contract is the sixth contract that Orbex has received from the ESA.

Chris Larmour, the firm's CEO, said: "Orbex is set to be the first launch operator to be able to carry out high-energy X-ray inspection of rocket engines.

"As we move towards series production we will use this new capability to give peace of mind to customers and assurance to licensing authorities that we have a fully comprehensive propulsion testing regime in place."

Orbex is developing the Prime rocket, which will transport small satellites weighing around 150kg to low Earth orbit.

It is currently carrying out 'dress rehearsals' of launch platform at a facility in Kinloss.

It will commence commercial launches from Space Hub Sutherland.

Lars Vesth, of FORCE Technology said: "Our company is constantly pushing the boundaries of what is technically possible.

"Operating in the space industry has enabled us to be at the forefront of technology innovation over many years.

"In the 1980s FORCE delivered inspection systems for the US space shuttle.

"We were awarded our first ESA contract in 2005 and, more recently, have provided technology for the Ariane 6 launcher.

"The ESA contract will create an efficient high-energy X-ray inspection system specifically optimised for the Orbex mono-body engines.

"FORCE Technology looks forward to seeing our technology contribute to Orbex progressing to commercial launches."
