THE FORRES bypass will be closed over a weekend - and potentially two days afterwards - while essential roads maintenance is completed.

Resurfacing on the local section of the A96 is being carried out from Friday, February 2 by contractor Amey on behalf of Transport Scotland - the £278,000 project will address defects on more than 500 metres of the bypass.

An Amey spokesperson said: "The resurfacing will benefit more than 11,400 vehicles who use this route each day, creating a smoother ride for motorists and reducing the need for ongoing maintenance.

"All schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable."

The work will be undertaken on both single and dual carriageway sections of the A96 between Greshop Roundabout and west of A940 Market Street.

To ensure the safety of road workers and motorists, it will be carried out while the road is closed from 7.30pm on Friday, February 2 until 6.30am on Monday, February 5.

However, there may be additional works overnight on Monday, February 5 and Tuesday, February 6.

Where necessary, they will be carried out using temporary traffic lights or convoy working.

During the closure, traffic will be diverted.

Westbound traffic will turn left onto A940 Market Street and take the third exit at the roundabout onto B9011 Nairn Road to rejoin the A96 at Greshop Roundabout - Eastbound traffic will take the route in reverse.

Light traffic for Benromach Way and Waterford Industrial Estate will leave the A96 at Findhorn Roundabout (with eastbound traffic having followed the above diversion), taking the B9011 north and turning left after the railway bridge towards Waterford Road.

Traffic from south of Forres wishing to head east towards Elgin will follow the A940 north and turn right onto Orchard Road. Traffic can then follow South Street and turn right onto the High Street and follow Victoria Road to join the A96 at Findhorn Roundabout.
