A LUCKY woman from Hopeman scooped the top - four figure - prize in a local lottery draw on her first time of playing.

Amanda Lindsay entered the Forres Mechanics’ Cans Fans Lotto after seeing a post on social media about £3000 up for grabs.

The self-employed virtual assistant and complementary therapist said: “I was surprised, shocked, excited and very, very grateful.

“I still didn’t quite believe it until I found myself holding a giant cheque!”

The lottery has an initial jackpot prize of £1000, where entrants can select, or have supplied to them via lucky dip, four numbers from one to 25. The jackpot is shared by all entrants who correctly match all four numbers picked in the draw made at 3.45pm every Saturday. If no-one correctly matches all four numbers, the jackpot rolls over and increases by £100 for the following week’s draw. In addition to the lottery, prizes of £100, £50, and two lots of £25 are given out each week as a raffle draw from all purchased number combinations. All proceeds go towards the club and bi-annual contributions to community organisations in the area.

“I only started playing at the beginning of December,” said Amanda, “the week before the draw! I chose some favourite and meaningful numbers for one line, and used the lucky dip option for another.”

Mechanics vice chairman George Alexander explained that The Cans Fans Lotto is only allowed to go up to a maximum sum of £3000 in prize money.

He said: “If it gets to that limit, then it is drawn as a raffle prize so the winner simply has to be taking part in order to win, regardless of the four numbers they had chosen. Incredibly, the week after Amanda won, two winners won the £1000 because they both had the same four numbers that the computer generated that week!”

Amanda can now afford the time off work she has had to take recently due to health problems and family caring commitments.

She said: “The winnings will replenish my savings and give me a bit of security over household expenses for a while. It’s not glamorous but it is reality for so many of us right now. I’m also a volunteer with Moray Cats Protection, so the knock-on effect is more time to give to that without worrying about bills.”

Amanda is a great believer in local football clubs having lived next to Leyton Orient in Greater London before moving back to Scotland over a decade ago.

She said: “Everyone should give The Cans Fans Lotto a go as you’ll be supporting a great community asset.

“You can’t win if you don’t enter, and you may just be as lucky as me!”
