A GROUP of local silver screen enthusiasts has been invited to help boost community cinema screenings in Moray and Highland.

‘Spotlight’, a partnership between Eden Court and Film Hub Scotland, is developing film audiences in town halls, churches and libraries by helping organisations - including Film Forres - screen a diverse range of cinema.

Film Forres chairman Bob Kenny got involved following a chance meeting at Cromarty Cinema with the project’s coordinator Gražina Ščučkaitė.

He said: “Gražina was aware that Film Forres was a member of Film Hub Scotland as we’d been the subject of their newsletter highlighting the workings of Forres Film School. She was keen to know more about how we operate so we were invited to take part in a symposium to connect with other cinema communities.”

Funded by the BFI National Lottery, Spotlight is building a network hosting screenings for audiences of all ages, and making films more accessible. Community groups are supported with the skills and equipment to start their own film screenings. As well as Film Forres, the project is currently working with Cinema Nairn, Strathnairn Community Cinema and Evanton Community Trust.

“I would urge anyone interested in community cinema to make contact with Film Hub Scotland,” said Bob. “They believe passionately in its importance and have a wealth of experience and resources available.”

He added: “Film Forres is working in partnership to further develop and sustain our mobile screening service, and to assist and advise in the setting up and management of a dedicated Film Forres Film Club aimed at cinema enthusiasts seeking access to alternative titles.”

Film Forres has built a following at Forres Town Hall but is branching out with the help of Film Hub Scotland.

The Spotlight initiative is asking residents to share their cinema-going habits by completing a short survey, with a prize of £50 in John Lewis vouchers for one lucky participant. To be in with a chance, complete the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CinemaSpotlight

Bob said: “There is a resurgence of interest in the shared cinema experience and a demand for bespoke cinematic offerings. Spotlight is galvanising current and future provision. I urge anyone who has an interest in community cinema to participate in the survey!”

Ms Ščučkaitė finished: “Ultimately, the project will establish on-going film screenings that are accessible, affordable and inclusive for all.”

There is nothing quite like the unique experience of togetherness that comes with watching a film on a big screen with strangers.

“Spotlight supports organisations and communities to engage audiences in bringing more people to the cinema in a range of venues.
