THE community is invited to celebrate a historic worldwide event locally next weekend.

Forres Community Council (FCC) is organising a free get-together with refreshments donated by Tesco and Ashers for the coronation of King Charles III that is to be shown on the cinema-sized screen provided by Film Forres at Forres Town Hall from 11am-4pm on Saturday, May 6.

Community councillor Steve Ferris confirmed the programme will be shown on BBC.

He said: “We’ve not had a coronation in the UK for 70 years so it will be a momentous moment in history.

“People still talk fondly of going round to the house of a neighbour who owned a black and white 14 inch television to watch the last event!

“The fabric of UK life has changed since then, when there was still rationing and the country still had many scars left over from the war.

“Coronations bring people together and, for one day at least, give us all a lift!”

The coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla, as king and queen of the UK and the other Commonwealth realms is scheduled to take place at Westminster Abbey in London.

Charles acceded to the throne on September 8 2022, upon the death of his mother, Elizabeth who had reigned for 70 years and 214 days, the longest any British monarch or indeed any female in history had been queen for.

The modern ceremony will represent multiple faiths, cultures, and communities across the UK, and will be shorter than Elizabeth’s in 1953.

It will begin with the anointing of Charles, symbolising his spiritual entry into kingship, and then his crowning and enthronement, representing his assumption of temporal powers and responsibilities.

Camilla will be crowned in a shorter and simpler ceremony.

The royal family will then travel to Buckingham Palace afterward, in a state procession, to appear on the balcony and acknowledge the watching crowds.

The event will be marked by public ceremonies and celebrations in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the British Crown Dependencies and overseas territories.

Meanwhile Coronation Big Lunch street parties will take place across the UK and a Coronation Concert will be held at Windsor Castle.

The coronation will be shown on the big screen in the main hall.

Forres Community Council hopes as many people as possible enjoy the coronation together.

“Come and watch it live streamed on a big screen with your friends and neighbours,” said Steve.

“Attendees are welcome to bring a picnic if they prefer but we will be providing tea, coffee, juice, cakes and biscuits.”

Forres Osprey bus will be available for anyone with difficulty getting into town.

FCC are looking for volunteers to help out with serving the refreshments.

Please email info@forrescc.co.uk if you can help.

Steve finished: “Your support would be much appreciated to make this historic event an even more memorable occasion!”

There will also be a Coronation Cream Tea with crown shortbread at Rafford Village Hall on Saturday May 6 from 3pm. Tickets cost £5 on the door.
