JANUARY was a quiet month in terms of local crime according to an account presented to Forres Community Council.

The community safety report compiled by Police Inspector Andrew Meikleham lists antisocial behaviour, violence, theft, and a motor offence.

He said: “Much of the work carried out in January was intelligence-led with regards to road traffic offences and drugs warrants. The public play a key part with the information they provide.”

A vehicle was seen driving with no headlights on during the early hours of the morning. Further road traffic offences were identified and the driver was arrested and reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

Insp Meikleham confirmed there has been an increase in members of the public sending explicit photos to people they have befriended online.

He said: “Think twice before engaging in any relationship online and parents are advised to check the mobile phones of their young people regularly.”

There were reports of online fraud in the Forres area. An elderly person’s bank account was hacked and their card used. Someone else received an email pretending to be from the Federal Government Grant webpage - they were tricked in to transferring a significant amount of money, believing it to be going to a friend.

“When shopping online it is always advisable to use secure payment methods such as PayPal or a credit card,” said Insp Meikleham. “This reduces the risk of online fraud as they have measures in place should things go wrong.”

There were two domestic incidents over the course of last month.

One person was arrested in Kinloss for a serious assault.

Insp Meikleham finished: “Contact myself or the Forres and Speyside Community Policing Team via email ForresCPT@scotland.pnn.police.uk if there are any issues you wish to raise or discuss.”
