WOULD you like to learn about local ecology while maintaining one of Moray’s most beautiful places?

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is looking for volunteers to join twice-weekly work groups at Culbin Sands.

A RSPB spokesperson confirmed the role is suitable for over-18s and is required from September to April for four to six hours-a-session between Mondays and Saturdays.

He said: “You’ll be making a contribution to nature conservation in the area you are working to protect. You will learn new skills and gain knowledge about wildlife conservation work.”

He added: “We carry out tasks including removing scrub and small trees with hand tools, and burning brash as part of our LIFE 100% for Nature Project to improve sand dune and vegetated shingle habitats to benefit rare and threatened species.Volunteers need to be able to use bowsaws and loppers. They must also be able to move over steep, boggy and sandy ground.”

The RSPB provide Personal Protective Equipment such as work gloves and protective glasses, however, volunteers provide their own food, drink and outdoor clothing. Access is dependent on the timing of tides so planned work group dates are released every few weeks. It is recommended that new volunteers attend a trial volunteer session to ensure the role is suitable.

The spokesman said: “Our volunteers also help maintain paths, benches and fences. It’s work that never stops! We’ve lost a lot of wild landscapes, so the small places that we do have, need a bit of extra care.

“Join our fantastic volunteers who are helping to secure a healthy environment for wildlife.”
