A SAVINGS and loans cooperative founded in Forres has been granted £10,000 to upgrade its computer system.

The investment from the Berry Burn Community Fund allows Moray Firth Credit Union (MFCU) - based at 53 High Street but with satellite points in Elgin, Buckie and Keith - to be “future-proof”.

MFCU finance administrator, Jackie Nicol, is excited about the development.

She said: “Many of our computers were coming to the end of their life. The funding allows for upgrades such as windows 11 without future costs. The new systems allow our staff and volunteers to work more effectively. All of our workstations now have dual monitors, faster PC’s, webcams and speakers.”

She added: “The new computers streamline some of our admin’ work and, due to increased energy efficiency, reduce costs. The new equipment also allows our staff and volunteers to connect to outside agencies easier.”

MFCU is a not-for-profit social enterprise owned by its members and managed for their mutual benefit. It provides a safe home for savings with access to affordable low cost loans. Membership is open to anyone who lives or works in Moray or Nairn. All members’ savings are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. All members are eligible for dividends each year if there is enough of a surplus.

Jackie finished: “Our loan rates beat some of the high street and online lenders. I urge everyone to have a chat with us before committing elsewhere.”
