A man jailed for coughing on police officers has had his sentence more than doubled.

Last month, Iain Lindsay from Inverness became the first person in Scotland to be imprisoned for the offence.

The 48-year-old appeared in the city's sheriff court on May 12 and admitted coughing in the faces of two officers.

Although Lindsay was not displaying any symptoms of Covid-19 the incident was said to have caused the officers and their families significant alarm and distress.

Lyndsay, who has 30 previous convictions for various offences, including assaulting police officers, was originally imprisoned for four months.

However the Crown Office appealed that sentence to the Appeal Court in Edinburgh.

A 10-month sentence has now bee imposed.

Lindsay is one of around 300 people in the UK to be charged with offences of coughing or spitting at police during the pandemic.
