Cooling off in the Moray Firth

This basking shark pictured above was viewed earlier today off the coast of Nairn.

Despite its fearsome appearance and large size – basking sharks can reaching up to 26ft in length – the species is totally harmless to humans.

Rather than swimmers it survives by feeding on plankton.

The exact lifespan of a basking shark is unknown, but experts estimate to be about 50 years.
