A CONCERNED member of the public called the police after hearing of a gathering in Grant Park last weekend.

A reader who wishes to remain anonymous told the Gazette that her friend was out for a walk on her own at 10am on Saturday, March 21 when he noticed a group of around 30 people exercising together to music on the playing field across from Anderson's Primary School.

She said: "My friend couldn't believe what he was seeing as it didn't look like they were distancing themselves appropriately. These irresponsible and selfish adults were not setting a good example in the current virus pandemic.

"I phoned the non-urgent police number to report this. They did not the power to do anything about it at the time but said they would look into it anyway."

The reader was also unimpressed by local pubs encouraging attendance on Friday evening with cheap alcohol.

She said: "I feel so angry about this. I also noticed last week that one had a board outside saying they were open and asking people to support their local. This was so irresponsible and beyond belief that they could try and encourage people in to the pub to then put everybody there at risk and thereafter risking the wider community including their own families."

She added: "With regards to shoppers stockpiling goods, that is very wrong. At this very difficult and worrying time, supermarkets and other food outlets should be rationing goods to shoppers to ensure there is enough for everybody.

"People need to wake up urgently to what will happen if they don't abide by the Government's advice."

The Gazette has asked Police Scotland for comment.
