FORRES is on track to have a community trishaw following a showcase event at Grant Park on Sunday.
Prospective volunteers and users tested two trishaws supplied for the day by charity Cycling Without Age Scotland similar to the one Rotary Club of Forres is due to launch this month.
Rotarian Jim McPherson confirmed the group has invested £8000 in the bike - similar to a rickshaw but with the passengers in front - to offer local people free transport carted by volunteers.
He said: “We were pleased with how the showcase went. We achieved the aim of awareness raising and being seen in Forres.
“We got a number of prospective pilots signed up too, so our other target is being achieved!”
The scheme will depend on volunteer pilots - the Rotary team hope to sign up around 20 - as well as co-pilots who will sit in with passengers if required. Training in its use and the cycling routes will be offered.
Forres Rotary invited chief executive of Cycling Without Age Scotland Christine Bell to the park - she brought two trishaws for folk to try out.
Christine’s charity colleagues, ambassadors Eileen McAulay and Graham Watson, were also on-hand to help seven prospective pilots taking the trishaws for test runs.
“We have our official launch day on Saturday, April 13,” said Jim, “after which, we'll have our own trishaw based in Forres.
“We’re still trying to secure accommodation for it and would greatly appreciate any help with that.
“Our volunteer pilots will be trained in using the trishaw, as well as safely assisting passengers in and out.”
