FINDHORN and Kinloss is the first community council in Moray to sign up to a pledge to look after armed forces families.

Findhorn and Kinloss Community Council (FKCC) vice chairman Shaun Moat confirmed it is now the only community council in Moray to have signed the Armed Forces Covenant, acknowledging and understanding that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve.

Mr Moat attended Kinloss Barracks to receive the Armed Forces Bronze Employer Recognition Scheme award, part of the Armed Forces Covenant.

The awards are self-nominated by employers who pledge to support the armed forces.

Mr Moat led discussions about the Covenant with FKCC, drawing from his experience of serving in the RAF for eight years.

He said: "Moray has a long history with the armed forces and many veterans choose to settle here.

"FKCC consider personnel from Kinloss Barracks as very much part of the local community so having the Commanding Officer of 39 Engineer Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Walker present the award was fitting.

"I hope that we are just the first of many community councils who sign up - I invite others to show their support for our armed forces communities.’’

The award recognised FKCC's preparations and organisation of Remembrance services at Kinloss Abbey and Findhorn Village.

The awards are administered in Moray by Ray Watt from Highland Reserve Forces and Cadet Association, who also attended the presentation.

Mr Watt said: “I was delighted to travel to Kinloss to present the Employer Recognition Scheme Bronze award to the FKCC alongside Lt Col Walker. It is reassuring that FKCC have chosen to demonstrate their support for armed forces families."

Findhorn and Kinloss Community Council meet on the last Thursday of every month at 7pm at Kinloss Church Hall or the James Milne Institute.

"Our meetings are open to all of the community," said Mr Moat. "I urge members of the public to come along and hear what’s happening."
