An internationally renowned musician is returning to the Highlands to perform in Nairn.

Ruth Wall is set to make her first visit to Nairn Community and Arts Centre at 7.30pm on Friday, May 19 to give an evening performance as part of the Music Nairn concert series - she will be joined by composer Graham Fitkin and the pair will present a programme exploring stories of migration.

Wall has performed around the world - from London’s Royal Albert Hall and Sydney Opera House to Berlin Philharmonic and Radio City New York. She has featured as soloist with the London Chamber Orchestra and the BBC Concert Orchestra, and toured extensively with Goldfrapp, Kathryn Tickell, Ockham's Razor and Graham Fitkin. Wall appears regularly on BBC Radio and features in films including ‘Loving Vincent’ and ‘The White Queen’.

Composer Graham Fitkin has worked with artists and ensembles including Yo-Yo Ma, Kathryn Stott, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, New York City Ballet. He has won three BASCA composer awards and the Royal Philharmonic Society Composer Award in 2015.

Looking at migration in its many forms, the duo will use old Gaelic songs and tunes from bagpipe and fiddle books to make transcriptions for Ruth’s three harps - the sitar-like Renaissance bray harp, the medieval Gaelic wire harp (clàrsach) and the Scottish lever harp.

Ruth’s long-term research into the pibroch piping technique - an ornamental style underpinned by a drone - informs her playing style and inspires the sound world of this fascinating and unique concert, combining ancient aural sources with modern technology.

She will conjure up mesmerising and intricate patterns while Fitkin will introduce the evening and discuss the stories of migration connected to the music.

Advance tickets are available in person, on 01667 453476 or via www.nairncc.co.uk priced at £18 (£15 for Music Nairn members). Under 25 tickets are £3. Tickets will be available to purchase on the day.
