THE interim moderator at a local church is looking forward to welcoming back its congregation.

Reverend Sonia Palmer – who took over from Peter Taylor who had been in post since their predecessor Barry Boyd retired in January 2019 – hopes everyone enjoys St Laurence Church’s first service after lockdown on Easter Sunday (April 4).

She said: “We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back and anyone new who wishes to attend. Easter Sunday’s service will start at 10am and will last around 45 minutes. We will have prayers, reading, hymns and reflective messages.

“We are currently not allowed to sing, but we are fortunate to have a talented organist in Alistair Hardie. The congregational board and the session have been working hard to open the building. There will be strict cleaning before and after the service and social distancing during it. We look forward to wishing all of the community a blessed Easter.”

Rev Palmer paid tribute to well-known former minister, Barry Boyd.

She said: “Barry was ordained in St Laurence Church on August 27, 1993. He was devoted to this parish, rarely taking a holiday as it came first. I’m privileged to be back working in Forres where the people are welcoming, friendly souls. Before I became a minister I was a manager at Leanchoil, nursing for 39 years. Local people might recognise me by my name then, Quainton.”

St Laurence Church has been keeping in touch with its congregation via telephone, newsletters and social media, even starting a Facebook page for live stream and YouTube presentations.

Rev Palmer said: “I hope that as the church, schools and nursing homes reopen, we’ll be able to reconnect in person. We aim to start a family service in the near future.”

Until more than 50 people are allowed in churches at any one time, seats must be booked through the elders or Rev Palmer on 01343 310008.

“Rev Palmer said: “If you’re unable to get a place you’ll be put as priority for the next service. We will continue online services and the Holy week services from

my parent churches St Giles and St Columbas will be shared.”
