A large local choir will be supported by Moray’s young musician of the year at a local event this week.

The Forres Chorale Summer Concert in St John’s Church at 7.30pm on Saturday, June 10 will feature cellist and Forres Academy student, Edward Clark, before he competes in Glasgow for the Scottish Young Musician of the Year title.

Chorale musical director and St John’s organist, Brian Smith, has accompanied Edward in previous church concerts and for his diploma examinations.

He said: “Edward is an accomplished player, both technically and in his ability to interpret the music.

“His playing has an assurance that belies his teenage years.

“St John’s is a perfect venue for a choir of our size.

“It has a warm acoustic, and the church is a perfect size, giving concerts an intimate feel.

“We have been based there since we started in 2019.

“The Rector, Dr. Hamilton Inbadas, warmly supports our activity.”

A varied programme will include Haydn’s ‘Little Organ Mass’ and Mozart’s ‘Laudate Dominum’.

The soprano soloist is Valerie Chapman.

The recent coronation will be marked by the inclusion of Handel’s coronation anthem ‘The King Shall Rejoice’.

The concert will end with opera choruses from William Tell (Rossini) and I Due Foscari (Verdi).

Brian said: “The programme is varied in styles and content. The aim is to provide an enjoyable mix of music from different eras, with some familiar pieces and attractive but less well-known pieces, such as the ‘Three Madrigals’ by composer Emma Lou Diemer.”

He added: “We are delighted to be joined by such a talented musician as Edward, as we continue our policy of providing performance opportunities for young local players.

“They need every opportunity to perform to develop their skills and gain experience.”

Forres Chorale currently has a total of 35 members.

They are also performing a joint concert with American choir Canyon Choral on June 1 at St Margaret’s Church, Aberlour.

Brian finished: “We look forward to singing with young singers performing American repertoire. It is always a joy to sing with another choir, as the sound is always very special, and unique to that occasion. The experience promises to be a special one!”

Refreshments will be served after the concert at St John’s.

Tickets cost £7 and are available from R&R Urquhart, by emailing organist@stjohnsforres.org.uk or calling Brian on 07960861319. Students will go free.
