A CLUB for children with additional support needs has invested a four-figure sum of prizemoney into activities for its members.

The Wednesday Night Group (WNG), an activity-based social group for school aged youngsters led by Lesley Mawhinney, were delighted when Tesco community champion Kerry Speed and manager Andy Stewart presented a cheque for £4000 from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme in which, each time a customer shops, they are offered a blue token at the checkout to vote for the project they want funding to go to.

Lesley said: "We can't thank everyone who voted for us enough. I’m blown away by the generosity of the folk in Forres who clearly place a value on the continuation of our wee group!"

Attending sisters Nicola and Elizabeth Quinn also thanked those who voted for WNG by making some handmade cards which have been pinned up in the store.

"£4000 is a lot of money!" said Nicola.

"We are very lucky to have been given this money and I can’t believe we came first," added Elizabeth. "The group will be able to do loads of things with it, maybe even go on a trip together!"

WNG is run by the attendees' parents, who, in partnership with Lesley, agree on activities and outings. These include a trip to the Forres pantomime, theme nights, baking, crafts and other social activities.

The group relies on fundraising events to cover the costs of their regular activity-based social evenings throughout the school term time. Outdoor games and arts and crafts supplies are well-used and need to be regularly replenished.

The Quinn sisters raised more funding by donating a giant soft toy for a guess the dog's birthday competition, as well as a food hamper.

Kelsey Wilk took the dog home and Kian Farquhar walked away with the hamper following a draw during the group's Easter party.

The money raised from the draw and the Bags of Help award will be spent on outdoor equipment, including a new parachute for the group to enjoy games with, arts and crafts materials, indoor board games and a Nintendo Wii Fit.
