Airing on BBC Alba on Christmas night, Nollaig sa Bhothaig is being billed as heart-warming, joy-inspiring family viewing.

Peter and his partner Coinneach are the ultimate Christmas hosts, spending 12 months of the year winter-ready – rocking their signature look of bushy beards, woolly jumpers, furry hats and wellies.

With help from special guests and their faithful Westie Seòras, Peter and Coinneach transform their off-grid getaway into a sparkling winter wonderland – the perfect location for a traditional Christmas of mistletoe and wine, music and song, love and laughter.

In their Highland hideaway in Argyll, the pair put together some inspired festive creations all in company of friends and family, who travel down the Clachan Sound to join them.

Peter’s family hut overlooks the Slate Islands. Inaccessible by road or on foot, the only way to access it is from the sea, often by canoe.

Over the course of the programme we see the hut being transformed from humble shelter to winter wonderland, with fairy lights, lanterns, candles and decorations galore.

The hut will be decorated largely with organic materials, with plastic kept to a minimum as Peter uses his gardening skills, foraging in the woods that surrounds them for as much material as possible.

The principles behind Peter and Coinneach’s Christmas stem from the culture of hutting, a lifestyle that aims to bring people back to nature while making as little impact as possible.

From their outside tree, made out of fishing creels, to whatever sweet treats Coinneach is whipping up in the kitchen, Nollaig sa Bhothaig is a perfect slice of festive escapism.

Also on the menu from Coinneach is a decadent yule log and, of course, Christmas lunch.

There will be no shortage of singing or music either, with carols and ceilidh tunes reverberating through the hut.

Nollaig sa Bhothaig airs on BBC Alba on Sunday, December 25 at 9pm and will be available on BBC iPlayer for 30 days after.
