Extra activities will be run for Moray youngsters this summer following an agreement by the council this morning to provide extra funding.

A sum of £10,000 will fund taster sessions in different sports and community activities for kids ranging in age from pre-school to lower secondary.

Kim Paterson, the council's acting educational resources manager, said: "We don’t yet know the exact cost of the pandemic to our young people’s mental, physical and social wellbeing.

"But we do know many have become more sedentary and less active, particularly outdoors.

"This summer’s programme aims to re-awaken interest in sport and community activities and give a much needed boost to those who’ve developed a less active lifestyle due to the pandemic.

"This opportunity is key to supporting our young people out of lockdown and setting them on the track to success in the future."

Local sports clubs will be enlisted to help with the programme which will also liaise with organisations such as brownies, scouts and church groups.

Councillor Aaron McLean (Forres, SNP) chairs the Education, Communities and Organisational Development Committee.

He said: "I know lots of parents will be pleased to have some organised activities back for their children this summer and will be looking forward to seeing them return to action.

"We’re seeing the light at the end of what has been a long and dark tunnel and I, for one, am heartened by this planned investment in activities."

The programme of activities will be published ahead of the summer holidays.
