A LOCAL businessman and veteran has been recognised for his continued support of the armed forces community.

Donut Pig Digital Media owner, Shaun Moat, has proudly accepted the Gold Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Award - the highest honour within the Armed Forces Covenant - which encourages employers to support defence and inspires others to do the same.

He said: “We support serving personnel, reservists, veterans and spouses. Our veterans have many transferable skills and compliment any businesses. So I urge all Moray businesses in Moray to sign up to the covenant and show support for our armed forces community.”

The ERS encompasses Bronze, Silver and Gold awards for employers that pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to defence and the armed forces community, and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant, a promise by the nation to treat those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, fairly.

Amongst other stipulations, to achieve Gold businesses must: proactively demonstrate forces-friendly credentials as part of their recruiting and selection processes; ensure that their workforce is aware of their positive policies towards defence people issues; and advocate support to defence people issues.

Donut Pig Digital Media - a digital marketing service - works with the Career Transition Partnership, the MoD’s official provider of armed forces resettlement.

Mr Moat added: “I served in the RAF as a steward then air steward for eight years before being medically discharged. Throughout my business career, I have been an advocate of the armed forces community. I got Moray Firth Credit Union, The Cleaner Moray and Findhorn and Kinloss Community Council to sign up to the covenant and start their own journey through the award. I also volunteer with X-Forces Enterprise as a business captain, mentoring folk leaving the forces who are setting up their own business. X-Forces also helps those with business plans and getting start-up loans.”
