A FORRES man has spoken of his surprise at looking out of his bedroom window to see a man on a nearby roof, who he thought was up to no good.

He confronted the man who fled the scene. It wasn’t until the next morning that he realised the man was a lead thief.

What really annoyed him, was that the thief was using his shed as a platform while stripping the lead from a building on Hepworth Lane.

"It was about half ten at night and I was watching the TV upstairs when I heard banging outside," said the man who wishes to remain anonymous. "I got up and opened the curtain to a guy standing on my shed roof a few metres away from me."

The concerned home-owner ran downstairs and opened his front door with a bang. The thief jumped down and started backing off along Hepworth Lane.

"I asked him what he was doing to my shed to which he replied: "Nothing." I said that I had seen him on the roof. He got angry and said: ‘I dinnae break into sheds, son’ then he left."

"It was dark but I could tell he had a Glaswegian accent and was wearing a tracksuit. The guy was quite short, in his 40’s, and had some stubble. He looked like an older ned."

The following morning, the Forres man inspected his shed roof and found some damage. However, he noticed significantly more damage on the roof of the building behind it – approximately four metres of lead had been ripped off. The building is behind the taxi office that backs on to Grampian Property Centre on the High Street

The Hepworth Lane resident told staff at the property centre, who informed Grampian Police.

A police spokesperson confirmed that they are aware of a reported theft of lead on Hepworth Lane at 10.30pm on Friday, January 17. Their investigation is ongoing.
