A NATIONAL conservation charity is offering a new career and chance to work in some of Scotland’s most historic locations.

The National Trust for Scotland (NTS) is looking for the next generation of gardeners to help preserve and protect some of Scotland’s most beautiful gardens, with apprentice vacancies at Brodie Castle, Crathes Castle and Pitmedden Gardens.

For over 90 years, NTS has saved, maintained and shared many of the country’s most loved places, rich with history, heritage, nature and culture.

Head gardener at Brodie Castle, Ed Walling, confirmed NTS wants young people open to a career in the sector to apply for positions offering full-time, two-year contracts.

He said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about gardening to embark on a recognised training programme and gain qualifications and experience while working at some of Scotland’s most loved gardens.

"This could be the perfect role for someone who is looking for a new start and a new job or for someone who is still searching for their career path."

Over two years, apprentices will learn and develop a broad range of horticultural skills in a professional gardening environment.

The programme also provides a platform for career growth, with successful candidates able to study for a Modern Apprenticeship at SVQ level 2 in Horticulture (SCQF Level 5) through a block release programme with SRUC Oatridge College.

Ed added: "Our apprenticeship programme will also allow them to gain first-hand, practical experience from NTS gardeners who have decades of experience and are experts in their fields.

"The apprenticeships could offer a chance to someone who could be looking for work or a fresh start, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. And it’s a great opportunity for someone to turn their passion into a new career."

Recruitment for the apprentice gardener roles is now open with a closing date of Friday, July 2. Placements commence in early September.
