BOOKINGS are now being taken ahead of Moray recycling centres reopening next week.

Recycling centres will reopen from Monday, June 1, with strict social distancing in place at Chanonry in Elgin, Waterford in Forres, Gollachy in Buckie, and Keith.

More than 2,500 booking slots are available across all the centres weekly.

People are being urged to book online, but for residents without internet access, bookings will be taken by phone to the council’s contact centre.

Only cars will have access to the site. No pedestrians, trailers or other larger vehicles like vans and trucks will be permitted.

Strict social distancing will be enforced, which means that site attendants will not be able to help users unload vehicles or dispose of their waste. A maximum of two people from each vehicle will be permitted outside at the site. One visit per fortnight will be allowed to make sure as many residents as possible can access booking slots.

Residents will be able to dispose of household waste including bagged general waste, small electrical plug-in items (not bulky waste including white goods) and bagged garden waste, which they’ll be asked to empty when unloading into the garden waste skip.

Materials including soil, glass, metals, bulky waste, wood and rubble will not initially be accepted. These will be introduced at a later date.

The council’s kerbside bulky waste service has been reinstated, and unmanned recycling points and bottle banks are accepting glass recycling.

Waste manager Mike Neary said similar restrictions were being introduced by other councils to reopen the centres without overloading the service.

He said: "While we’re not in a position yet to return to ‘business as usual’, we’ve reviewed our procedures so that we can safely operate our recycling centres for residents to dispose responsibly of waste which they’ve stored.

"To enable us to run this service as safely and smoothly as possible, residents should remember to bring their booking reference number, and visit using the vehicle stated in their booking form. We won’t allow admission otherwise."
