A LARGE crowd enjoyed this year’s big switch-on organised by the Forres Christmas Lights Committee (CLC).

CLC spokesman, Alan Hunter, confirmed an estimated 400 people turned out for the event on a cold but dry Saturday afternoon.

He said: “It went really well. There was a happy atmosphere generated by a crowd along High Street including a lot of youngsters who were very excited to see Santa. The bands were well received too.”

The event started with festive favourites from Wave Radio and Elgin City Band before Santa himself led a seasonal parade to the tunes of Forres and District Pipe Band.

“A lot of people joined in the parade from the town hall to the Tolbooth,” added Alan.

The march came to a halt at the town Christmas tree outside the Tolbooth where everyone congregated to hear more music and for Santa’s big moment. A big cheer went up as he flicked the switch and High Street was illuminated with an impressive display of lighting.

Santa and the CLC were grateful to Maclean’s Highland Bakery and Forres Tesco for treats including selection boxes they were able to give away during the event.

“Santa was much appreciated,” said Alan. “He was kept busy, taking photographs with families and handing out treats.”

Alan said: “We are very grateful for people helping us raise an excellent amount, especially in comparison to previous years and in mind of the fact that not many people carry cash these days! We’re very happy with how Saturday went and hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as we did!”
