A banned motorist was caught after he was pulled over by police on the A96 for a minor matter.

Nathan Thomson appeared in Elgin Sheriff Court yesterday.

The court heard that the 31-year-old had originally received a five-year ban back in 2017 for motoring offences.

This ban was due to run out in December.

However before it did, Thomson was stopped as he drove past Forres on October 21.

Defence solicitor Grant Dalgleish stated his client had made a "foolish decision".

Mr Dalgleish said: "His friend was driving most of the journey but became tired and asked if anyone else would take over."

The lawyer added that, when stopped, the defendant admitted straight away to police he shouldn't have been driving.

Thomson, who lives in Inverness, was fined £600 and disqualified for a further eight months.
