A community group is raising funds to improve facilities at a local beach.

The Findhorn Village Conservation Company (TFVCC) hopes to renew eight sets of steps to the back shore which have fallen into disrepair.

TFVCC chairwoman, Christine Hunt, confirmed more than £50,000 will be required.

She said: “The stringers are in good condition so we don’t need to replace them but we do need to replace all 192 treads.

“We will be retaining as many of the posts and rails as we can to limit the amount of new wood we need.

“We plan to use locally sourced wood which will withstand the elements and last for 35-40 years, however, with ongoing maintenance, the new steps will be in place for longer than that.

“Reusing existing wood will help to keep costs down as well as helping the environment.”

Since TFVCC took ownership of the steps they have been patching them up but they have now deteriorated so much they need to be renewed.

Chairman of Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation (MIRO), John Low, confirmed the steps are essential.

He said: “This area is tidal and safe access over the boulders of the sea defences can be challenging.

“The beach steps provide safe extraction points - important for anyone enjoying the seaside.

“We encourage anyone who uses the beach to make a donation.”

TFVCC have been applying for grants to fund the project and have already raised £25,000.

Christine said: “Whether you are a walker, a swimmer, kite surfer or yoga enthusiast, the back beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on which to spend time.

“If you are lucky you might even see dolphins playing just beyond the surf!

“We need to make it as accessible and safe to visit as possible.”
