A special concert at the Tolbooth featuring players from across the United States of America was sold out.

Having played the venue in 2017, Harpa returned to raise funds for the building’s custodians, Forres Heritage Trust (FHT) - they did not disappoint with an enchanting performance of traditional music from the US, Ireland, Norway, and Scotland.

FHT volunteer coordinator Peter Haworth confirmed the event followed three successful winter talks to raise vital funds for the trust, which also looks after Nelson’s Tower.

He said: “The idea of world class musicians from different parts of the USA - who have performed for American Presidents and world heads of state including our own Royal Family - performing in the Tolbooth Courtroom was beyond belief!

“The music they played in two relaxed sessions spanned the centuries, from the beautiful works of the medieval and renaissance periods, through the traditions of Scottish, Irish and Scandinavian music, as well as modern music and several original pieces composed by the performers.”

During the interval and after the performance Harpa invited members of the audience to try playing their instruments for themselves.

Peter said: “Harpa’s motivation is the love of music, a desire to encourage others to learn the art and to generally widen audience appreciation and understanding. They’re a truly exceptional unit.”

Harpa have made seven concert trips to Scandinavia and Scotland. Each tour has been a labour of love, with each member of the group paying their own way to spend their holidays touring and performing, raising funds for charity. Previous beneficiaries have also included Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity as well as artistic, civic, and church missions.

Harpa also played with fellow harpists the Highland Clarsachs at the Tolbooth - fresh off their win at the Inverness Music Festival - before their evening gig in the venue.

Harpa have returned to the US and are planning a Spring 2025 tour there. They are looking forward to returning to the UK soon.

Meanwhile, FHT has The Nelson Society visiting later this month.

“They will be visiting the Tolbooth and of course Nelson’s Tower,” said Peter. “And there will be a public talk on John Scott who was Admiral Lord Nelson’s public secretary.

“The tower and Tolbooth guided tours are going well, and there’s also historic photo exhibitions coming up.”
