PEOPLE looking for a warm place to spend time being entertained in comfort and company have options in Forres.

Community warm spaces are available at St Leonard’s Church in the town centre, as well as at Forres Baptist Church near Drumduan Park on Clovenside Road.

Millions of households are in fuel poverty this winter, with people with disabilities, elderly people, children, people from ethnic minorities, and low-income households amongst the most affected.

Many are looking to the local community and churches for support.

Some offer free food, advice, somewhere to charge a phone or just somewhere to be comfortable, warm and sociable.

St Leonard’s clerk Roy Anderson confirmed the church is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-4pm.

He said: “Our cosy drop-in offers the chance to play board games, cards and jigsaws. Visitors can browse a variety of magazines and books.

“Please enjoy our warm space out of the winter cold!”

Secretary Rosemary Pannell said: “It’s a very comfortable environment where folk can enjoy free refreshments and/or a friendly chat.

“We welcome anyone who would like to call in so that they don’t feel isolated. We offer a listening ear as well as food and essentials to top up shopping so that no-one has to go without necessary items.”

Forres Baptist Church offers use of a pantry with food, toiletries and household items. Informal budgeting courses are also available to help find ways to make money further.

“We are very thankful for the facilities,” added Rosemary. “We want to offer support and encouragement to our community.

“Last month, we began a new ‘Alpha’ course where people can explore the Christian faith in a safe environment. Anyone is welcome to join.”
