YOUNG players from a local sports club have presented gifts to older members of the community.

Forres Girls Football Club (FGFC) players Elise Allan (12), Georgia Forsyth (11), Ferne Forsyth (5), Kiera Simpson (12), as well as Amy (12) and Holly Sutherland (8) delivered hampers containing sweets, biscuits and cakes, as well as bunches of flowers to the residents and staff at Meadowlark and Cathay Care Homes.

FGFC chairman, Graeme Sutherland, confirmed the club intended to give the players chocolate eggs back in Easter but the girls suggested the alternative use of funds.

He explained: “The older girls were happy to look at redirecting the gift. Cathay and Meadowlark were obvious choices.”

The gesture was welcomed at both homes but the visitors were not able to chat to residents as they are still following covid protection measures.

FGFC coach, Ann Ewing, said: “Well done to our girls for making an independent decision to be kind to others! And thank you to both Meadowlark and Cathay residential care homes for welcoming us.”

Both care home’s residents and staff were very grateful for the gesture.

A Cathay spokeswoman said: “Everyone was delighted with the donation. It’s warming to know people in the community are so generous. We held a cheese and wine evening along with a delicious spread on Saturday to delve into the delicious gifts. There was classic music playing and dancing too.”

A Meadowlark spokeswoman added: “A big thank you and we wish the girls all the very best with their football season.”

Elise trains twice-a-week with FGFC under-12s and plays at monthly festivals.

She said: “It felt good to be able to help out other local organisations. I enjoy competing against other teams and seeing our players improve.”

Clubmate Holly appreciates advice from FGFC’s coaches and the opportunity to play football regularly.

She said: “It felt nice to give out presents! Practice is fun. I enjoy being out in the fresh air and learning new skills.”

FGFC was founded in 2018 and runs at under-eight, under-10, under-12 and under-14 levels. The club is currently keen to attract new players born between 2016 and 2019. Training is usually at Grant Park on Monday and Wednesday evenings but moves to Forres House Community Centre during the winter months. Sessions typically focus on technique and skill, with fun activities based around practices and small sided games.
