The tournament, sponsored by Ian Mackenzie Joiner and Contractor, was contested as a tribute to local snooker player and coach Adam 'Woody' Wood, who passed away earlier this year after a short illness.

A total of 32 players from across the north-east took part on the tables of two Elgin venues, The New Club and The Ex-Service Club.

The competition heated up from the first ball struck and Woody would have been delighted to see the level of play that was on show.

The tie of the first round saw reigning Moray Closed Snooker Singles champion Stephen Hepburn (Nairn) take down Moray County Snooker Captain Adam Macleod (Elgin) on the final black.

Into the last 16 the quality matches kept on coming. New player Sam Gourlay (Elgin) and Neil Stirling (Huntly) took out deciding frame victories against Adam Ferguson (Forres) and Tommy Smith (Kinloss) respectively.

The last eight saw top Scottish amateur and reigning champion Marc Davis (Aberdeen) start to motor as he dispatched Richard Stuart (Elgin) 3-0.

Surprise package Scotty Little (Lossiemouth) also won his match 3-1 against stalwart Roy Phimister (Elgin).

Former champion Kenny MacPherson (Dyce) defeated Hepburn 3-0 in the penultimate quarter final whilst Stirling won a tense deciding frame to defeat Gourlay and reach the semis.

Davis stepped it up again to defeat Stirling 3-0 and MacPherson did the same to Little which meant the two Aberdeen League players were to contest the final.

Davis was delighted to win and recounted how much he enjoyed playing with Woody as a team mate some years ago in the RUA club in the Aberdeen Snooker League.
