A LOCAL wind farm is part-funding the staging of a UK-national sports event at Grant park.

Forres Harriers successfully bid for a grant of £3,000 from the Berry Burn Community Fund to pay for the infrastructure of the British Masters Cross Country Championships in Forres on March 17.

Harriers spokesman, Doug Cowie, is delighted with the support.

He said: "We've put on the Scottish Cross Country Championships in recent years and were asked if we could handle the UK version.

"So it was fantastic to hear that our application for support had been successful – it's great news for Forres as local businesses will profit from the event."

The funding will help pay for equipment including stakes, rope, paint and marshal bibs, and to upgrade the course around Grant Park to international standard.

"Once the event is over, local groups will be free to use it," added Cowie.

"It will be looked after by the Harriers but made available to anyone organising a future event at the park."

Funding will also be used for hire of the main hall and canteen at Forres Academy for competitors. The runners will each be presented with complimentary shortbread from Macleans Highland Bakery and pictures of Grant Park.

"We want to demonstrate that the north of Scotland can put on a memorable national event," finished Cowie. "Runners will be competing from all over the UK – there should be around 500 in total – many of whom will be here with their families.

"We will send our visitors home thinking about what a great day they've had here."
