Forres Mini Cans football team accepts donation from Forres Country Music Club
More young players at the town’s biggest football club are being kitted out thanks to a generous donation from a local music group.
Forres Country Music Club has donated £250 to the under-10s at Forres Mechanics FC - AKA the ‘Mini Cans’ - to be invested in new football strips.
Head of youth development, Allan Frisken, is delighted to see further backing from the community.
He said: “The support our youth development receives from other local clubs and businesses - including The Gazette - is brilliant.
“For most of this season, we’ve been using old strips. Now, with donations and sponsorship, we are able to kit out our younger groups.
“Tom Ross and Sons sponsor new strips for our under-8s teams, the Golds and Whites. Henderson Decorators have also sponsored the Mini Cans Whites strip.
“Ultimately we want to have all of our younger players wearing the same strips, from the under-8s to the under-14s.”
Forres Country Music Club spokeswoman, Kate Hardie, confirmed the £250 donation was raised at their live events in the Mosset Tavern.
She said: “We donate to three different groups-a-year - nominated at our AGM.
“We’re doing very well since moving to the Mosset after covid. We will have been running for 35 years in November.”
Following exceptionally high numbers attending the Cans’ open training sessions last year, the youth system expanded the under-10s, under-12s and under-14s squads. Each now have two teams per age group.
Friskin praised the Mini Cans efforts this season.
“We can see players with potential,” he said. “The boys are going through a transition period as we prepare older players for moving up. The older under-10s played the younger under-12s as part of this, and did very well.”
Unfortunately, Forres Mechanics are still forced to use out-of-town pitches to train.
Friskin explained: “There’s still no synthetic playing field in Forres so all of our age groups are scattered at different facilities throughout the week. The costs for these facilities eats into our funds.
“The Mini Cans trained at Elgin High School and Kinloss Astro during the winter.”
