Scottish Gas Scottish Cup second round: Buckie Thistle join Fraserburgh, Brora Rangers and Brechin City in round three while Banks o’ Dee upset East Fife
Eleven Highland League clubs went into Scottish Cup battle on Saturday, and five progressed into the third round.
Buckie Thistle, who landed last year’s plum draw by taking on Celtic in round four, made more progress with a 2-0 success at a Sauchie Juniors side which had thrashed Strathspey Thistle 6-0 in the previous round.
Marcus Goodall’s first half goal gave Jags the edge and a late header by Darryl McHardy - whose stoppage time overhead kick defeated Carluke Rovers in round one - earned the Victoria Park side a trip to Clydebank in the next round.
Clydebank beat Elgin City three years ago and ended Keith’s interest in this year’s competition with a 3-0 success at Kynoch Park.
Oisin McHugh’s close range header broke the deadlock on 52 minutes and Matt Niven added a second, before a stoppage time Nicky Little penalty put the result beyond doubt.
Huntly were involved in one of the three all-Highland League ties and gave league leaders Brechin City a stern test before going down 3-2 at Glebe Park.
Two penalty kicks helped the former SPFL side through, after they took the lead through a Ewan Loudon strike.
Angus Grant’s 19th goal of the season pulled Huntly level before Dayle Robertson netted Brechin’s first spot kick just before half time.
Callum Murray got Huntly back on level terms with 15 minutes to go, but the home side was awarded another spot kick on 81 minutes and Robertson slotted what proved to be the winner.
Perhaps the shock of the round came in Methil, where Banks o’ Dee defeated League 2 leaders East Fife thanks to Jevan Anderson’s first half goal.
The Aberdeen side welcome Hamilton Accies to Spain Park in the next round.
Fraserburgh battled it out with Turriff United in an Aberdeeshire clash which went to extra time.
Sean Butcher’s opener for Broch was cancelled out by a Timi Fatona equaliser on 74 minutes.
Fraserburgh edged ahead in extra time with goals by Jamie Beagrie and Connor Wood for a 3-1 success - Beagrie was sent off just before the end.
The Buchan victors host League 1 Annan Athletic in round three.
Brora Rangers earned a third round trip to Livingston by coming from behind to defeat fellow north side Formartine United.
Julian Wade edged the visitors in front at Dudgeon Park but Andrew Macleod drew Brora level after the break and defender Colin Williamson’s seventh goal of the season won it nine minutes from time for the Cattachs.
Extra time was needed at Harlaw Park, where Inverurie Locos took on a Dundee North End side managed by former Scotland international Kevin McNaughton.
The Tayside outfit hit the headlines this season by defeating Whitehills 25-0 in the Scottish Junior Cup and they have been a force in the Midland League this term.
Jay Halliday gave Locos a 17th minute lead before Frankie Devine levelled on the half hour.
Neither side could added to their tally in the 90 minutes so an extra half hour was required, and strikes by Dylan Paterson and ex-Huntly man Cameron Blacklock won it for the Dundonians.
A Linlithgow Rose side who beat Lossiemouth in the last round defeated Clachnacuddin 3-0 thanks to efforts by Greg Skinner, Dylan Paterson (pen) and Harry McMartin.
