Nairn St Ninian WFC want to recruit more players and will use the annual awareness-raising week to try and attract some fresh blood.

This year’s ‘Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week’ is specifically focusing on health and wellbeing, particularly important as Scotland emerges from the pandemic - see here for more information.

Football plays a significant role in communities across Scotland and along with the rapid growth of the women’s and girls’ game, the Nairn club is keen to promote all it does to keep people active and to foster a life-long love of the beautiful game.

"Nairn St Ninian WFC welcomes everyone who loves to get involved in football, seeing the growth of the club and the game over the last year has been immense." said head coach Ross Hepburn."

The club trains at Nairn showfield on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6.30-8.30pm and welcomes anyone who is eager to try the sport or just stay active in a friendly environment.

"We have a great bunch of girls who all just love the game and come to training and want to develop and learn new skills, as a coach you just love to see that," Hepburn added.

One of the Nairn playing squad, Deanna Lundie said football plays an important part in her life.

"You know when you go to football you forget about everything and enjoy having a kick about with your team," she said.

"Nairn St Ninian WFC has a great atmosphere. Everyone gets on with each other and it's a great place to make new friends.

"I would encourage any women or girls thinking about playing football to give it a go, it’s a great way to keep fit, healthy and great for the mind."

Aileen Campbell, CEO of Scottish Women’s Football (SWF) added: “Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week is a really important way to celebrate all the sport and activities women and girls take part in.

“At SWF we are really proud that our member clubs up and down the length and breadth of Scotland provide good, positive experiences and opportunities for women and girls to play the sport they love – largely driven by our amazing volunteers.

“The 90 minutes of football on the pitch are important, but so too is the massively positive impact off it. Sport boosts confidence and increases wellbeing, and we all know how much a football team means and contributes to its local community.

“We thank all those involved in running teams and giving their time, enabling the successful growth of the women’s game.”

Vivienne MacLaren, Chair of SWF, said: “I’m really proud of what SWF contributes in actively encouraging more women and girls to take up football and sport.

"It’s hugely important for girls and women to be active and we know that football can play an even bigger role in making that happen.

"We want to shout loudly about the inspiring role models we have right across our game and use that as a catalyst to encourage the next generation of footballers to join a team or volunteer.”

Anyone aged 11 and over can join the club. Contact Deanna Lundie on 07842 708199 or Ross Hepburn on 07842 958087 for more information.
